Fenugreek
|
Trigonella foenum-graecum
From ancient times, through the late 19th century, fenugreek had been a major herb used for treating an assortment of diseases. Traditional Ayurvedic physicians use it to increase milk production in nursing mothers .In American folk- medicines it is used to promote menstruation.
Studies have found that fenugreek contains the chemicals, --diosgenin and estrogenic, that are familiar to the female sex hormones, estrogen. With this in mind, it is recommended for the relief of menopausal symptoms.
Studies have also shown that it can reduce cholesterol levels. It may help in alleviating Type II diabetes ( non- insulin- depedent diabetes). Fenugreek is useful in soothing sore throat, pain, cough and minor indigestion. For wounds and inflammation, a poultice of the crushed seeds is often effective. The seeds contain mucilage, which, when mixed with water becomes a sort of gluey bulk that has a cooling and healing effect on irritated tissues of the bowels. It can treat costipation and diarrhea. A tea of fenugreek seeds can reduce fevers.
