Inula helenium
This is a tall scented perennial plant, which used to grow wild, but these days, is mostly cultivated in home gardens.
It is mainly used as a tonic and a digestive stimulant, and is helpful for stomach upsets. It is also used as a remedy for troublesome cough and colds, asthma , whooping cough and bronchitis. When combined with echinacea, it is said to be an excellent treatment for tuberculosis. It is also a stimulant and a tonic to the mucous membranes, and it warms and strenghtens the lungs and promotes expectoration. It can also be used to relieve urinary retention, kidney and bladder stones, and delayed menstruation.
A strong decoction of the root can be used as a warm or cold compress for itching skin, and especially useful for cold sores. A weaker decoction is used as a cleansing lotion for spots and pimples and other skin blemishes.
