Plantain

Plantago major
The whole plant as well as the seeds can be used medicinally.
Plantain is an astringent and an expectorant, and is a useful herb to treat bronchial complaints, cold and coughs. It is often taken in the form of an infusion. Plantain has a soothing, cooling, and healing effects on sores and ulcers. A paste of the crushed leaves is used to treat wound and check bleeding, to relieve insect bites and stings, eczema, burns and scalds, A poultice of the herb can be used to relieve the discomforts of haemorrhoid, as it has an anti-inflammatory effect.
For use in leucorrhea, a strong tea is used as a douche. It is also used to treat urinary tract infections, urinary stones, oedema, intestinal worm infestation, enteritis, dysentery, hepatitis and conjunctivitis of the eyes.
Uses
- A strong infusion of the herb is a useful remedy for shingles.
- The plantain seed is good for dropsy.
- The roots, can be used for toothache.
Those who are pregnant or constipated should not take this herb.
