Marshmallow
|
Althaea officinalis
This is a tall attractive herb growing wild by river estuaries and marshes and ditches.
The roots, flowers and leaves of this plant contain mucilage which soothes throat irritation and is useful for the relief of coughs, bronchitis, sore throat and pneumonia. It is also useful for inflammation of the bowels, diarrhea and dysentery; painful urination and other kidney complaints.
An inhalation, made up of the crushed leaves in hot water, is good for sinusitis and head colds. Externally, a strong extract of the grated roots will help to alleviate bruises, sprains and aching muscles. A compress soaked in a strong solution of the herb will relieve mild burns and reduce inflammation. A tea of this herb is used to bathe sore inflamed eyes. This is a very effective herb for moisturizing and softening the skin.
Nursing mothers use it, sometimes, to promote lactation
