Oregon grape
|
Berberis aquifolium
Oregon grapes contain a natural antibacterial agent, berberine, which stimulates the secretion of bile enabling the proper functioning of the liver and bowels. It treats liver complaints like, jaundice and hepatitis
This herb is also a blood purifier, making it useful in treating chronic skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. Other uses of this herb are for the relief for rheumatism, constipation, kidney complaints, uterine disorders and vaginal discharge (leucorrhea).
The medicinal uses of this herb are nearly indentical to those of barberry (Berberis vulgaris). It is generally a safe and helpful herb when used as directed. But it should be avoided during pregnancy as it may stimulate the uterus, and also high doses of berberine may interfere with the body's ability to utilize vitamin.B.
