Garlic
 

Allium sativium

This is a pungent strong smelling herb and is a member of the onion family. Garlic figures as one of humankind's most ancient herbs. It is widely used as a culinary herb. Medicinally it is an effective remedy for many ailments. In traditional Ayurveda medicine, it has been used as an aid to treat a sluggish digestion, diarrhoea caused by intestinal infection, and worm infestation and it also helps in stomach ulcers.

Garlic contains the substance, Allicin, that is thought to be able to lower cholesterol level by as much as 10 to 15%. It has other beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system such as thinning of the blood and preventing blood clots formation in the blood vessels and lowering of blood pressure. It removes toxins from the body system, stimulates the immune system, It gets rid of cancer-causing agents from the body and may even prevent certain forms of cancer. It is also good for yeast and fungal infection.

For hoarseness of voice, coughs and stubborn bronchial infection, colds, sinusitis, laryngitis, candida, thrush and cystitis, garlic is useful as treatment as well as for prevention.

A garlic ointment is helpful for rheumatism and swollen glands. For sore throat, a garlic infusion can be as a gargle. Garlic is a good herb for improving the condition of hair, and can also treat dandruff.
