Evening primrose
|
Oenothera biennis
This is a tall plant with yellow flowers, growing wild along streams and on wastelands. The roots of the plant can be eaten as a vegetable. Evening primrose oil is obtained from the ripened seeds. The oil is rich in linolenic acid and gamma linolenic acid, which are essential to the metabolism of the body. This Vital (GLA) is converted, in the body, to prostaglandin, which helps in the growth and reproduction of cells, keep the blood vessels healthy, the gastrointestinal tract functioning and the body's blood sugar stable.
It is very useful in treating those who suffer from premenstrual stress or menopausal discomforts. The oil is also effective in treating eczema. Those people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, would find that their conditions show definite improvement, if they take a course of GLA in the form of evening primrose oil.
Researchers suggested that GLA may help those who have diabetes, and those womem with breast pain. Taken internally, it is believed to benefit the skin, hair and the eyes.
Taking evening primrose oil poses little risk to healthy persons, but it should be avoided by those who have temporal lobe epilepsy or manic-depressive disorders.
