Curcumin
|
Curcuma longa
This is an anti-inflammatory component, derived from the yellow pigment of the spice, turmeric.
Tumeric is extensively used in Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of conditions ranging from arthritis to flatulence, blood in the urine, bruises, colic, respiratory diseases, chest pain, jaundice, hepatitis and menstrual disorders. It stimulates circulation; digestion, respiration and the uterus.
Curcumin has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, as well as analgesic properties, and is often prescribed for menstrual problems, uterine tumours, poor circulation, poor digestion and skin complaints.
It is used for treating female conditions such as amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhea and pains in the lower abdomen. It is useful in the treatment of arthritis, back and neck pains and also good for the relief of sport and traumatic injuries, when there is pain and swelling from blood stagnation.
Curcumin is said to protect the liver against damage from toxic chemicals and promotes the flow of bile. It should not be taken during pregnancy, or when one is suffering from anaemia.
