Cranberry
|
Vaccinium macrocarpon
Berries of all variety, including cranberries, may help protect our bodies from cancer, urinary tract infection, viruses and inflammatory diseases such as athritis, as well as help to reduce our allergy symptoms, and eye and nerve damage especially those people suffering from diabetes. Cranberry is rich in flavonoids, citric acids and Vitamin C. and is beneficial to the health of the entire urinary system including the kidneys and bladder. A team of scientists from the Rutgers University, New Jersey,USA, have isolated compounds called condensed tannins or proanthocyanidins from cranberry fruit, which were found to be capable of preventing E. coli bacteria from attaching to cells from the urinary tract. It has been suggested that cranberry juice can enhance the remedial properties of antibiotics. This could mean less need for antibiotics for those people who are susceptible to urinary tract infections. Drinking 300ml of cranberry juice daily may help ward off infection of the bladder and kidney, as well as the urinary tract.
It can be taken with no side-effects. Cranberry juice is normally marketed in the form of unsweetened juice.
