Bromelain

Ananas comosus

This is an enzyme derived from the pineapple plant. In the Caribbean, for centuries, the pineapple has been thought to be a cure for all kinds of sickness. Over the years, scientists and researchers have found that an enzyme, bromelain, from the pineapple fruit and stem can break down protein, and that various concentrations of that enzyme can prevent cancer cells from growing, aid in burn healing, relieve stomach upsets and pain, reduce inflammation, prevent blood clots ( that lead to heart attacks and strokes), and even clearing plague from arteries.

It has been used to treat various types of inflammation, oedema and thrombus. It helps to reduce swelling and pain of any inflamed areas and of sport injuries. It is also, used to treat painful menstrual cramps, stimulate menstrual flow, chronic bronchitis, and post-surgical discomforts. This protein-digesting enzyme can also liquify and decrease mucous secretions and relax smooth muscles.

Precaution

It is non-toxic if used in the correct dosage. Over dosing may lead to possible side effects such as nausea and diarrhoea, and increased menstrual flow. It should be avoided during pregnancy.
