What Is An IUCD?
IUCD stands for intra uterine contraceptive device and are made of plastic or metal and are placed in the woman's womb to prevent pregnancy. They are inserted by specialists or doctors specially trained in the procedure.

How Do They Work?
They are inserted by a doctor into the womb and prevent the sperm from reaching the egg. They also prevent a fertilised egg from implanting in the womb. IUCD work on the principle of barriers.

Effectiveness
IUCD are about 99% or more effective!








Advantages

  • Very effective.
  • No memory or skill needed on patients part.
  • Reversible by removal.



Disadvantages

  • Can cause increased bleeding.
  • Not suitable for young women with many partners or those who have yet to have children.
  • Increased risk of pelvic infection but mainly at time of insertion the IUCD does not cause the infection.
  • Need a skilled doctor to insert eghospital or family planning.
